4/30/18 Last Day of April!

English 7:  After DOL/Journal, students received spelling worksheet lesson 10. For the remainder of class, we reviewed The Giver for the quiz tomorrow (Ch. 11-19).  Homework:   -spelling worksheet - read AR
English 8:  Students received vocabulary lesson 7 packet (due tomorrow for grading).  They were given some time to work on vocabulary in class, but most of the period was spent in cooperative reading groups.   Homework: Vocabulary packet  - read AR

Wear a Paper Clip Tomorrow!

During WWII, paper clips were worn by Norwegians as a symbol against prejudice and racism.  They were worn on their collar or lapel as a non-violent protest.  Tomorrow, April 20, is Hitler's birthday, but it is also Ms. Nash's.  The most amazing birthday gift  for Ms. Nash would be students wearing a paper clip tomorrow as a symbol of tolerance and remembrance. 

4/19/18

English 7:  After journal and spelling, students worked in cooperative reading groups to identify symbols and images that do not belong in the community described in our class novel.     Homework:   -spelling sentences - read AR
English 8:  Peer editing!  Students worked on edits, revisions, and the final copy of the research report.  The final will be due next Tuesday, April 24th (postponed due to AIMS testing).    Homework: vocabulary sentences - work on final draft- read AR

English 8:  After discussing vocabulary words, students learned about and practiced writing in-text citations in the proper format.  For the remainder of the class, students peer edited the research report rough drafts.    Homework: vocabulary (definitions) - work on final draft- read AR

4/17/18 AIMS Science - 8th Grade

Students in 8th grade took the AIMS Science test in this classroom.  Schedules were adjusted to accommodate this, so 7th grade did not attend English class at all today.

4/16/18 AIMS Science Test Tomorrow - 8th grade!

English 7:  After DOL/Journal, students received spelling worksheet lesson 8 (words derived from French).  We discussed the words in both pronunciation and meaning.  Homework:   -spelling worksheet - read AR
English 8:  Students watched a short tutorial on the AIMS Science program (TestNAV), and then took time to explore the practice tests available. Section 5 vocabulary words were assigned.   Homework: vocabulary (synonym/antonym)  - read AR

English 7:  After taking The Giver quiz (Ch. 6-10), students worked on journal and spelling.   Homework:   -spelling definitions - read AR
English 8A:  Students were given some time to work on vocabulary or their research reports (outline was due today), they read in cooperative reading groups for the remainder of class. 
English 8B:  Students took the quiz for Section 2 of Anne Frank.  If the quiz was not completed in class, it is homework (open book).  For the remainder of class, students could work on either vocabulary or the research report.   Homework: vocabulary (definitions) - start rough draft - read AR

English 7:  Spelling words were discussed for meaning & usage.  The remainder of class was spent in cooperative reading groups.  There will be a quiz tomorrow on The Giver Ch. 6-10.  Homework:   -5 X each - study ch. 6-10 spelling word list - read AR
English 8:  Vocabulary words were discussed for meaning & usage.  Students practiced writing various thesis statements, which culminated in a thesis statement for their own research reports.  Outlines are due tomorrow.   Homework: vocabulary (categories) - outline (due tomorrow) - read AR

English 7:  Students wrote a response to the Paper Clips documentary rather than DOL/Journal today.  We have resumed the spelling program, and students received The Giver Ch. 11-15 word list.  For the remainder of the class, we read The Giver in cooperative reading groups. Homework:   -Spelling (synonyms & antonyms)-  read AR
English 8:  We have resumed the vocabulary program.  Assigned today: Section 4 Anne Frank vocabulary words. After discussing the outline (due Wednesday) for the research report, students read Anne Frank in cooperative reading groups.  Homework: vocabulary (synonyms & antonyms) & research report outline - read AR
